WHAT IS One Way 2 Play?

OW2P, One Way 2 Play, is a systematic program developed to confront the problem of drug use among students by instilling values, encouraging goal-setting and establishing accountability through positive peer pressure.

It challenges students to sign a commitment card saying they will be alcohol and drug free.

In a recent survey of 125,000 coaches, over 90 percent of the respondents said the number one challenge they faced in dealing with their athletes is the problem of drug and alcohol use. And the problem is not just limited to athletes. It is a problem in every part of our society.

OW2P contains three critical elements that make this program one of the most effective in America. When we are talking about One Way 2 Play, FCA stands for Faith, Commitment and Accountability.

Faith they can receive wisdom to make and carry out good decisions.

Commitment to say “no” to alcohol and drugs, as well as helping others to keep their commitments and sign the commitment pledge. (Students have a 60% greater chance of following through on commitments that they sign.)

Accountability to their friends, group leaders and families in keeping their pledge. (Five key accountability questions allow students to have peer help. Students have a 85% greater chance of following through on their commitment if they stay accountable to a peer once a week.)

The 5 Hard Questions:
1. Are you living and playing alcohol and drug free?
2. Are you encouraging others to live and play that way?
3. Are you being honest with at least one mature person about your feelings and temptations?
4. Are your decisions being made by faith?
5. Are your thoughts, words and actions honorable?

OW2P is about urgency
In the wake of our country’s rash of teen problems, including drug and alcohol abuse, administrators, superintendents and parent groups are desperately searching for answers. Behind all of the rhetoric of new and improved programming, curricula and focus groups, there is a glaring need for relevant, engaging and challenging interaction with students about this issue.

The answer is the One Way 2 Play Drug Free! assembly program as presented by Steve Fitzhugh and Ray Sydnor, the national spokespersons for FCA’s One Way 2 Play Drug Free! program.

OW2P is about decision making
Throughout the presentation, students will have the opportunity to examine their personal decision-making process. They will gain an understanding of the elements in their world that shape the decisions they make. Volunteers selected from the audience will participate in an illustration that helps demonstrate the challenge of making right choices in the face of peer influence.

OW2P is about relationships
Nothing is more pressing in the lives of today’s students than the variety of aspects concerning their relationships, -- boyfriend-girlfriend, best-friend or just the folks one hangs around. One of the most impacting portions of the assembly is the dialogue about relationships. How do we select our friends? Whom do we allow ourselves to get close to? How do we treat others? Here we also unveil ways in which we sabotage our hearts through compromise as a result of poor relationships.

OW2P is about self-esteem
One of the best ways to let the air out of peer pressure is to value oneself. At that point, one is able to stand against the most powerful influence in the lives of teens today, peer influence. Students, through a series of illustrations, learn that the only thing they possess more valuable than themselves is their honor. At this point students are presented with the challenge to have enough courage simply to be themselves.

OW2P is about alcohol and other drug-abuse prevention
By the time a student reaches high school they’ve heard more statistics, warnings and drug-free campaigns than they care to mention. The last thing they need is another “just say no” speech. OW2P is much more than that. Steve Fitzhugh and Ray Sydnor weaves gut-wrenching summaries of real-life teenagers who failed to heed the challenge not to use or abuse drugs. These life stories often silence crowds and provoke serious contemplation.
